How It All Began
I was about fourteen years old, and my friend Ksenia (Ksyusha) and I were wandering near my house on a hot summer day.
We had just had a sharp argument with our classmate Tanya and decided to go to her flat to apologize. As we approached the entrance we knocked and rang the doorbell countless times, even shouted, but Tanya stayed silent – the hurt ran deep.
The Unexpected Meeting
We slumped onto a neighboring bench, trying to decide what to do next. I glanced into Tanya’s apartment window (she lived on the ground floor) and stood completely still.
In the pane stood an old, plump woman with short, tightly curled hair. Her eyes were narrowed, her mouth twisted into a hostile sneer. My heart clenched, and I shouted:
— Ksenia, look into Tanya’s window!
In the same instant the woman disappeared, as if she had melted into the glass. A trembling terror seized me.
Entering the Apartment
Ksenia could not understand what was happening, but I insisted we had to get through to Tanya as quickly as possible. We rushed back to the doorway, and after several more attempts Tanya finally opened the door, looking very displeased.
Shivering, I asked:
— Did you see anyone at the window about five minutes ago?
Tanya answered, surprised, that no, and said she had been in another room at that moment. I told her what I had seen.
Tanya’s Reaction
Tanya was shocked. She claimed that no one could have looked into the window, because she was home alone. After hearing my story, she called her mother, and the three of us discussed the incident.
Tanya’s mother recalled that the flat had once been occupied by a plump, curly‑haired woman who later moved to the apartment above and died there shortly after.
Aftermath and Memories
Tanya and her mother decided that nothing more would happen in the flat. We left, but I still recall the episode with horror. Occasionally, when I pass that same entrance, I hear a faint whisper of wind, as if someone is still watching from the window.
What Remains in Memory
- Fear that arrived through an ordinary window.
- Mystery of the old woman, leaving only a cold murmur behind.
- Lesson: sometimes the past does not die; it merely hides behind glass.
This story reminds us that even the most familiar places can conceal unexplained and bone‑chilling secrets.
