When Michelangelo died on February 18, 1564, in his workshop in Rome, the Pope desired to bury him in St. Peter's Cathedral. However, this was not part of the sculptor's relatives' plans. Michelangelo's nephew secretly removed his body, disguising it as a pack of goods, and shipped it to Florence, where it was solemnly buried in the Church of Santa Croce—the tomb of the great princes of Florence....
